Currently dealing with sensitive teeth?

If you have noticed either a shooting pain or a mild twinge in your teeth whilst consuming food that is either hot or cold, you may be experiencing what is commonly known as tooth sensitivity. Although this can develop at any age, tooth sensitivity is more common in individuals who are between the ages of 20 and 40.

If this is not identified or treated early enough sensitive teeth can also be a sign of more serious dental issues. Therefore if you feel you may be dealing with sensitive teeth and it is affecting you, by seeing a dentist in Thorpe Bay they will be able to identify the root cause of your sensitivity and provide you with treatment options

What causes sensitive teeth?

Teeth sensitivity occurs when the enamel, which is the thin outer layer covering the tooth, is worn away or is much thinner than usual. This can be due to a number of factors. One reason why the enamel may have worn down is due to dental erosion, which is caused by foods or drinks that are acidic. If you tend to brush your teeth too hard this can also cause the enamel to wear down. Other reasons why the enamel on your teeth may have worn down could be if you grind your teeth whilst you sleep, have a cracked tooth or if you suffer from gum disease.

Given that teeth sensitivity can be a result of a number of problems, it is important that you seek professional advice from a dentist in Thorpe Bay in order for the problem to be treated.

How to treat sensitive teeth

Once the dentist in Thorpe Bay has found the problem, they can provide you with a number of treatments in order to help ease your pain and reduce sensitivity. You may be given fluoride gel or toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Fluoride treatments are particularly effective as they are able to strengthen the remaining enamel on your teeth by rehardening it and fluoride treatments also protect your teeth from any damage or decay.

Another treatment which may be offered to you is dental sealants. If you have noticed increased sensitivity with your molars or pre molars, dental sealants may be placed on these teeth in order to protect them from decay. Dental sealants are essentially plastic coatings which can either be clear or white depending on the type of sealant used.

It is important to note that teeth sensitivity can take some time to treat, and it is likely that you may need to attend several dental appointments.

In extreme cases, you may be offered a root canal treatment to deal with tooth sensitivity.

The benefits of having your sensitive teeth treated

Once you have started treatment for sensitive teeth, you will notice that you will be able to consume your favourite food and drink as normal without worry of experiencing any pain.

It is important that you continue to book regular dental appointments at your local dental practice in order for the dentist in Thorpe Bay to create a bespoke care plan for you to ensure that there is a reduced risk of further tooth wear.
